David P. (“Hutch”) Hutchinson
Hennepin County Sheriff
David Hutchinson was elected Hennepin County Sheriff in November 2018. He was sworn in as the 28th Sheriff of Hennepin County on January 7, 2019.
As a 15-year law enforcement and public safety professional, Sheriff Hutchinson began his career as a police officer in Bayport, Minnesota until he joined the Metro Transit Police Department in 2006. Prior to winning election as sheriff, he served as a sergeant, working on the north side of Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs. He also supervised the Peer Support Program, Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), and Community Engagement Team.
While working in the inner city, Sheriff Hutchinson served in the poorest and most forgotten neighborhoods of Hennepin County. He worked with diverse communities, from recent immigrants and refugees to long-established families of Minneapolis. This experience allowed Sheriff Hutchinson to engage in community problem solving and partner with businesses and agencies across the county to improve the safety and health of our communities.
Sheriff Hutchinson knows the importance of public safety and community service. Moreover, he understands that these vital goals are wholly consistent with his core values of transparency, responsiveness, and flexibility.
Public safety and service is a proud tradition in Sheriff Hutchinson’s family. His father, now retired, was a police officer for 30 years. His mother was a customer service manager at a major airline. Today, Sheriff Hutchinson lives in Bloomington with his husband Justin and their dogs, Nike and Rex. He enjoys spending time with family and riding his Harley.
